I frequent lumberyards and hardware stores, where I find inspiration in everyday objects and their transformative possibilities. I also look for things others have discarded. Mangled, weathered and rusted items are appealing to me; items that have been flattened by vehicles are particularly interesting. I am curious about the geometries found outdoors; leaves, feathers, and pinecones follow me home regularly and I investigate their natural structures.
An architect by training, I draw on traditional techniques of drafting and model making, and also a love of a wide variety of artistic media, all of which are important tools to translate my ideas into form. A visit to my studio may reveal undulating constructions of wood and metal, an Alice-in-Wonderland trip through a scale model sculpture park, experiments in paint and color that that prompt the question, “Is this really flat?” and unique household items that shout, “Just say ‘yes’ to whimsy!”
